Ever seen the Woodstock film? Well, during the slot by Santana you’ll have seen a blistering drum solo by a 20 year-old guy called Michael Shrieve. His performance made a pretty big impression on me when I was 15 or 16 (probably the good hair and the fact he wasn’t much older than me, as much as the drumming), so imagine my delight when I found out this incredible track from the group Automatic Man had him all over it. Just picture Outkast’s Andre 3000 fronting a poppy Funkadelic circa Free Your Mind or Maggot Brain (admittedly that does just sound like Outkast, but hey… this is from 1976) and you’ll get an idea of how good this is. Definitely an end of night favourite.
Check out the album it’s taken off too, also called Automatic Man, for a pretty stunning eclectic mixture of space rock, funk, and Jimi Hendrix/Eddie Hazel-inspired guitar, with some Steely Dan harmonies thrown in there for good measure.
