Another short-lived, mainly 7″ label that I was a big fan of (especially the Ed Laliq releases) was High Society. Existing for two short years between 2002-2004 it was run by PPQ label manager James Mullord (read all about PPQ here), who would later go on to manage Pete Doherty (also releasing his first solo single, Babyshambles). It was his advise that got our own label off the ground… so thank you James, wherever you are.

Ultimately PPQ and High Society merged to become 1-2-3-4 Records. Here are some of our favourites from their catalogue below.

The White Sport – She Is Groovy
The White Sport had a pretty regularly shifting line-up from what I remember, both drummer Adam Ficek and guitarist Patrick Walden would later join Babyshambles (via Littl’ans). The one constant however was Andrew Aveling, one of the founding members of Add N To (X) (the brackets were placed around the “X” after he left the band). This b-side of theirs is closest they ever got to his old Add N To (X) analogue synth sound.

Ed Laliq – Ride
Ed has remixed Tiefschwarz and Headman amongst others and has released tracks on labels such as Blast First, Wagram, Gomma and Kitty-yo. As well as his solo work he was also a member of donAteller (see below). He later went on to join and produce Man Like Me. This is the b-side to Clean. And yes, that is a rather hefty Prince sample in there.

Genital Panic – Whos In The Skies?
One of a few aliases of Mark Leckey (also in donAteller). Mark famously went on to win the 2008 Turner Prize for his video installation piece Industrial Lights and Magic.

Ed Laliq – Hello Stranger

donAteller – Dominator
Made up of Mark Leckey, Bonnie Camplin, Ed Laliq and Enrico David. Thanks to the excellent SBMP3B blog for this rip as my 7″ kept skipping.
