Everyone knows this song backwards, right? But imagine yourself back in 1983, August 3 to be precise. You happen to be in Minneapolis at the First Avenue club where Prince is playing a benifit show for the Minnesota Dance Theater Company. Remember this is 1983, a whole year before the Purple Rain film and album are released; no one has heard the song; and Prince is famous, but not the biggest star on the planet, yet. The night’s show is already pretty special…new songs have been debuted…it’s new guitarist Wendy Melvoin’s first show, and essentially it’s the first outing for The Revolution. Then the last song starts, no one sings along, everyone just silently listens in awe as one of the most celebrated songs of all time is literally born in front of them. Understand this…it’s this very same live recording that is the version you hear on the Purple Rain album. The intro is edited down, a mooted third verse is dropped and a few strings were later overdubbed, but that’s it! Amazing! Enjoy this footage before it gets taken down yet again. And while we’re talking about the great man make sure you go and pick up the latest issue of [...]

NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell tells the story of one of the most astonishing pop culture years in American history. New York City had fallen in decay and chaos. There were not enough jobs, not enough money, not enough police, not enough schools, and not enough social services. There was a city wide black out with major looting, there was a serial killer on the loose, and the Bronx was burning. Yet out of the chaos, emerged one of the most creative times any city has ever encountered. Hip Hop was emerging from the South Bronx, punk music was emerging from the lower eastside centred around GBGBs, and disco was emerging from Queens and midtown Manhattan (The Loft, Paradise Garage and Studio 54). Elaborate, finely crafted graffiti art decorated the subway cars. Break-dancers danced in the streets. There was a huge sexual liberation with sex clubs and a burgeoning porn industry. In the beginning of the year, the world was not paying attention, and most of this activity existed in its own underground bubble. Yet by the end of 1977 all of this artistic expression was about to become part of mainstream America and would remain popular for generations [...]

A nice little look inside Lindstrøm’s studio courtesy of Anthem Magazine. What are these three keyboards? When did you get them? How often do you use them? The small one on top is the Yamaha DX-100, famously used by Roger Troutman (Zapp) with his talk box … or did he use a Minimoog? Anyway, it´s a nice little FM thing that I just can’t seem to sell. [Laughs] Next one, in the middle, is the Hohner D6 clavinet, one of my all-time-favorite instruments. I got this one really cheap from a guy here in Norway―it’s one of my things that, in fact, is in very good shape. It even came with the original legs and a mint-condition plexiglass music-stand ! The big, black monster is a Hammond organ … I believe it’s an M-100, but I don´t really care―it doesn’t really sound very good, but, because of that, I love it! Especially those two reverb buttons on the right―they’re clearly malfunctioning. When I press both buttons at the same time, the whole organ starts to self-oscillate! And that’s probably the coolest thing with this piece of history. Funnily enough, I use the organ much more than any of the other two things. Actually, I tend to [...]

Sadly the other week the musician Clare Fischer passed away. Now the name might not immediately mean anything to you… but Fischer, as well as producing over forty albums under his own name, is the man behind most of Prince’s unique orchestral arrangements from Parade (without a doubt our favourite Prince album) onwards. These include the long unheard track Crystal Ball, the unreleased 1986 album of the same name being the original incarnation of the Sign ‘O’ The Times album, and Prince side project The Family, which was actually their first work together. Amazingly the two never met in person, with Prince even refusing to see photos of Fischer, scared that he might jinx their successful working relationship in some way. “Prince is intelligent. He never visits the studio when I am working for him; and I have never met him in person. He sends me memos and we talk over the phone. Once I sent him my “2+2″ Grammy winning CD. I heard from people that were present at the time that while he took out the disc he looked away from the cover, saying, ‘I don’t want to know what he looks like. It is working just fine [...]

Sadly I have forgotten pretty much everything about how I came across this Les Rythmes Digitales live album. What I can recall is that it was official, Jacques Lu Cont (aka uber producer Stuart Price) put it together as an exclusive for some now defunct online mp3 store, and that he relished the opportunity at being able to “turn the crowd noise up”. Download the whole set here (Soundcloud). And while we’re talking about the great man check out this taster from his new album due sometime this year.

Here’s a special mix that we’ve finally finished just in time to catch the end of Tummy Touch records 15th anniversary year. This was a pretty epic undertaking for us, we started with well over 8 hours of music (and that was after we cherry picked) which we managed to edit down to the 80 minutes of goodness you have here. Tracks missing in action that we would have dearly loved to have squeezed in if we’d had the time include… Turbomen – Sexy Lady, Tutto Matto – You, Chungking – Cold Outside, Chantilly – Tasty Treats, Bud Bongo – Organ Grinder, Skylab – The Viper and Organic Audio – Into Something.
A few weeks ago we came across this video of an exquisitely built circuit bent Casio MT-40 synth (via J Saul Kane of DC Recordings) which comes with a total of 26 modifications. Now, the MT-40 (and it’s grey MT-41 successor) is a classic in its own right, mainly for single-handedly inventing the massively popular Sleng Teng riddim that kickstarted the Digital Reggae revolution in the mid ’80s. The MT-40 included a pattern based on Eddie Cochran’s song Somethin’ Else, the slowed down bassline of which formed the foundation of Sleng Teng. Anyway, after seeing this video we decided we had to try and track one of these modified beauties down (for the completely uninitiated the wooden sides and back panel are all additions). Turns out they’re made by Space-Cat Audio Technologies (aka the lovely Arron and Abi), “purveyors of the finest circuit bent, modified, re-designed electronic musical instruments”. We got in touch and they very kindly said they could build us one by Christmas. And as an unexpected delight they have been emailing us daily with photos of the build progress which we have shared below. This will be updated as new images come through. Update: Video of final build now added to the bottom of this post. Update [...]

Vince Clarke doesn’t really need much on an introduction. He’s synonymous with synth pop, and a legend in the history of electronic music as a founding member of Depeche Mode, Yazoo and Erasure (and not forgetting his recent reunion with Martin Gore as VCMG). Needless to say, we’ve always been fans of his. Anyway, I’d known about his current studio based in a log cabin located amongst the woods of Maine, USA through this excellent Motherboard episode you can see below. What I didn’t know is that he sold off this stunning domed, partially underground studio and house in Chertsey, Surrey, pictured above, to facilitate the move. Apparently it had awful acoustics and suffered from terrible damp problems that played havoc with the mass of analogue equipment…but who cares when it looks as good as this. The site once belonged to both 10CC’s Kevin Godley, and earlier Keith Moon, where his notorious parking of one of his cars in the pond mishap occurred. Read an in-depth interview with Vince about the building of the studio here.

Gothic was my first introduction to Ken Russell at the tender age of 15. I even managed to smuggle it into my English class for something we were doing about the Romantic Poets. “Here Miss Best is Julian Sands running naked along a roof top but he is playing the part of Percy Shelley so it’s like totally relevant, yes?” Years later when I moved to London one crazy thing lead to another and for a brief and precious moment in time I met and worked with my hero Ken. The day I met him we ate a stir fry with his wife Elise (who was lovely), I got to wee in their nautical themed toilet, and we chatted about finding love and the frustration of not holding onto the rights of so much of his work. Oh we talked a bit about Ollie Reed and Nikola Tesla too. I know that 84 is a pretty good innings, but we all hold selfish desires to eek our heroes out for a little longer to see that glimmer in their eye on the telly now and again, or read some great words spill from their mouths and into a magazine. Well, [...]
